We are also working with the Burundi government and community to implement a rural electrification programme with clean mini-grids across the Eastern provinces of the country. We need grant, impact and DFI funding to build a vertically integrated renewable energy services company that will deliver this programme as we are in the procurement phase of our pilot site implementation. We are starting in Giharo, a market town 10km North East of Kurubaho which is a major crossroad town comprising the three communities of Kabingo, Buyega and Gasunu, in Kabingo commune, Rutana province.

The Burundi programme is our most ambitious so far, through which we intend to build a new type of energy services company in Africa that will own energy generation assets inside the national utility, supply mines and C&I and be an EPC that delivers mini-grids as a small private utility with more than 40,000 connections. We will use innovation, our experience, and the support of the government, development finance institutions and local people to create a commercially viable renewable energy services company that will produce, distribute and supply to everyone in its operational areas. This will connect hundreds of thousands of people, commercial and industrial (C&I) and larger businesses like mines and agricultural producers to high quality, consistent, productive use 220V AC clean electricity in one of the poorest countries in the world.
